2025 Methane Summit

来源: 时间:2025-04-02

Methane is a powerful but short-lived climate pollutant responsible for a third of current warming. Over a 20-year period, methane is 80 times more powerful than CO2 in trapping heat. Amid rising concerns over energy security, affordability and climate change, the international community has recognized that methane mitigation, especially reduction of fossil energy methane emissions, offers the fastest and most cost-effective measure to slow global warming.

Recent advancements underscore the growing global momentum to address methane emissions. Key developments include the EU’s energy methane regulation, Canada’s strengthened rules, and the launch of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC). In parallel, China’s Methane Emission Control Action Plan highlights an increased focus on methane within climate strategies. China's plan targets methane reduction in key areas, such as coal mine gas utilization, leak detection and repair (LDAR) in the oil and gas sector, and agricultural waste-to-resource initiatives. These efforts highlight a concerted push to integrate methane mitigation into broader climate action frameworks.

Against this backdrop, and building on the success of the previous four sessions of the China Methane Summit, the 2025 event aims to bring together stakeholders from policy, industry and academia from China and abroad to discuss the latest progress and opportunities, and explore innovative solutions to accelerate methane mitigation.
